Agricultural Use

Concept Explanation

Agricultural Uses of Micro Organisms

Blue-green algae and bacteria like Rhizobium (that live in the root nodules of leguminous plants like pea and soya bean) help in fixing atmospheric nitrogen and increasing soil fertility.

  • Microorganism plays very important role in agriculture because the soil microbes (bacteria and fungi) are essential for decomposing organic matter and recycling old plant material.
  • Some soil bacteria and fungi form relationships with plant roots that provide important nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorus.
  • Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia to nitrite followed by the oxidation of the nitrite to  nitrate occuring in separate organisms or direct ammonia oxidation to nitrate. The nitrifying bacteria are Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Nitrospira etc.
  • Denitrification is the process that converts nitrate to nitrogen gas, thus removing available nitrogen and returning it to the atmosphere.
